In the Every Taylor Swift era of streaming, it’s easy to fall in love with singular songs from a band or musician rather than listening to them as part of an album. But an artist’s album tells a story and captures a particular moment and sentiment. It’s this interplay that gives context to the individual tracks, adding another layer of depth to the music and its creator(s).
By likening her albums to Eras Tour, a journey through her discography and inextricably linked life stages) Taylor Swift provided further definition to what an album is or can be. It’s a record, after all – a unique culmination of emotions, influences, and events. With a solo artist like Swift, whose albums so closely document her own life experiences, her collective work acts as a scrapbook of sorts, preserving her past selves as she grows older (but just never wiser!). It’s a similar feeling for many of her fans, who grew up (or grow up) alongside her albums, and might recall their first love with one track and their deepest loss with another. It’s not Swift’s enviable abilities for writing a catchy tune that make her the phenomenon she is. It’s the voice she gives to the Eras we live alongside her.
Revisiting all of our beloved Eras, each will have a rundown of its strongest points (“Where It Shines”) and its weakest (“In Need Of A Polish”). We will also cover the “Main Writers” of each album/Era (anyone who is credited as a writer on two or more songs on the original release), “Notable Guests” who were featured and/or wrote on a track, and “Taylor’s Version” (where applicable) to address how the re-recorded album and any “From The Vault” songs might have impacted how the work as a whole is viewed.
Our assessments of each album’s highs and lows hopefully serve as a helpful reminder and encapsulation of the Era, but it’s highly likely you’ll have different opinions on particular tracks mentioned.
