Early life
Emma Laird was raised in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England, as the only child of Marie Paterson and husband John Gillan, who is a singer and recording artist. She developed a love for acting very early on, attending several youth theatre groups and taking part in a wide range of productions at her school, Charleston Academy.
Laird attended Tupton Hall School, completing her A Levels in 2014.
After being into modeling for a few years, she decided to become an actor and joined acting classes to hone her acting skills. She also continued modeling as it was her source of income and used the earnings to fund acting classes.
Career
Scouted by Models 1 at Leeds Festival when she was 18, Laird was a model for seven years. In 2019, she became the face of Pandora for the brand’s autumn campaign.
Laird has spoken critically of the modelling industry, calling it “very dangerous for young girls” as she was repeatedly told to lose weight. In addition, the lack of creative freedom “bored” her. Fatigued, she enrolled in acting classes at the New York Film Academy.
Emma Laird’s career began with short films.
In April 2021, Laird was cast in her debut television role in the Paramount+ crime thriller Mayor of Kingstown as Iris, “a dancer who uses her charms to her benefit, until those charms are used against her”. The series premiered later that year. The Hollywood Reporter described Laird’s handling of concurrent offers as “li[ghting] up the town’s buzz meter”.
On the show, she played Iris opposite Jeremy Renner and Dianne Wiest, and her performance garnered attention from both audiences and critics. This role opened doors to more significant opportunities, and she soon found herself cast in leading roles in high-profile projects.
In 2023, she was cast as Desdemona Holland in the mystery film, A Haunting in Venice, directed and produced by Kenneth Branagh, where she co-starred alongside Camille Cottin and Jamie Dornan.
That same year, she joined the cast of The Crowded Room as Annabelle alongside Tom Holland, Amanda Seyfried, Sasha Lane, Lior Raz, and Emmy Rossum.
In October 2021, Variety included Laird in their annual list of 10 Brits to Watch.
In 2023, Laird starred in the Apple TV+ series The Crowded Room and made her feature film debut in Kenneth Branagh‘s A Haunting in Venice. That April, she joined the cast of the film The Brutalist.
Emma also has starred in the movies Fackham Hall in 2024.
